LEZHË · NORTHERN ALBANIA

Where the mountains meet the Adriatic

Two and a half thousand years of history between a protected lagoon, twelve kilometres of sand and the table that made Albanian slow food famous.

THE PLACE

A small city with a very long memory

Lezhë began as Illyrian Lissus, high on the hill above the Drin. It is the city where Albanian princes gathered in 1444 to form the League of Lezhë, and where Skanderbeg was buried in 1468 — his tomb still lies under the open roof of St. Nicholas.

Below the hill, the land flattens into lagoons and pine forest before it reaches the sea at Shëngjin. Inland, the road climbs to the villages of Kurbin and the ridges of Mirdita. You can swim, birdwatch and eat a nine-course farm lunch in one day.
